Wind Mitigation Inspections

Wind Mitigation Inspections are done for savings on your home owner’s insurance.  The inspector will check your doors and windows for impact rating and check your hurricane shutters for impact rating.  Then the Home Inspector will check up in your attic for the roof deck attachment to your trusses or rafters, then check the truss or rafter attachment to the home. Finally the type of roof is inspected.

Not all home inspectors can perform Wind Mitigation Inspections.  Continuing Education has to be maintained every other year.  Quoted from the Department of Business and Professional Regulation,

“And 2 hours of hurricane wind mitigation which shall include training on completion of the ‘Uniform Mitigation Verification Inspection Form,’ OIR-B1-1802 (Rev. 01/12), incorporated by reference in Rule 69O-170.0155, F.A.C. (eff. 2/1/12). “

How much will your Wind Mitigation Inspection save on your Homeowner’s Insurance?  That is impossible to tell from the Home Inspector.  The list of variables is long: age of home, type of construction, number of stories, type of roof, age of shingles, type of roof deck attachment, truss attachment, location of home, insurance company, etc.  Clients have told me of savings from $50 a year to several hundred dollars a year.
